Mountfield Heath School report

Very sadly, after a long and sometimes bitter battle, Mountfield and Whatlington Primary School was closed in 2014.  At this date (September 2016) there is no indication from East Sussex County Council or the Diocese of Chichester as to its future use or development.

The origin of the school was the granting of a piece of land opposite what was the Bell Inn (now Bell Cottage) on the A21, by Tilden Smith in December 1849.  It was gifted to the Churches of Mountfield and Whatlington for a building to be used as a school for the "labouring, manufacturing and poorer classes" and for a residence for a schoolmaster/mistress.
